Brief Tip: Canine Obsessive Rug Licker

(Return to the main Books & Articles index page)

1. Prevent access to the lick area when you're not home or asleep.

2. Provide the dog three gimborn natural sterilized bones; stuff one with monterey jack cheese, one with beef jerky and one with peanut butter.

3. Transfer the compulsion to obedience and buster food cube from pet store which you fill with your dog's kibble to engage in nose pushing and soccer like paw pushing.

4. 10 sits, with treats, 10 lie downs with treats, and 10 minute stay; first at the farthest point from the lick area, and over a 3 to 4 week period, while on leash and anti-pull collar, at the lick spot.

5. Make lick spot aversive by spraying either hair spray or a combination of Japanese horse radish (wasabe) and water. If it persists, he may need an anti-obsessive drug like prozac, and a nutritional analysis may need to be done.
