Brief Tip: The Five Reasons Dogs Dig

1. Dogs dig cooling holes to seek relief from the heat of the day.

2. They dig to create dens in which to give birth.

3. They dig to root out prey, such as gophers and rabbits.

4. Surprisingly, they sometimes dig because we teach them to. If you allow your dog to watch you landscape or garden, don't be shocked if after you finish the initial planting it "helps" finish the job by re-digging it for you. It's a good way for him to earn doggy allowance: help dad and mom out in the yard.

5. Dogs also dig to relieve boredom and anxiety.
